Authentic Puerto Rican Jibarito Recipe

Total Time 24 minutes

Ingredients

  • Plantains
  • Thin Steaks
  • 1 Tbsp. salt
  • 1 tsp. garlic powder
  • Sliced tomatoes
  • Lettuce
  • Cilantro
  • 1/4 Cup Mayo
  • 1/4 Cup Ketchup
  • Hot Sauce to taste
  • 1/2 tsp. garlic powde

Marinade

  • 1 Tbsp. Adobo
  • 1 tsp. Cumin
  • 1 tsp. Oregano
  • 1 tsp. White Vinegar
  • 1 Tbsp. Olive Oil

Instructions

  • Marinade steaks in Adobo, Cumin, Oregano, Vinegar, Olive Oil and enough water to make sure they are coated. You want to go a minimum of a couple of hours. obviously the longer the better.
  • Mix Mayo, Ketchup, Hot sauce & Garlic Powder in a small bowl, this will be spread on finished sandwich (in the video I forgot the garlic powder and had to do it off camera d'oh!). Refrigerate until ready for use.
  • Skin your plantains, I cut them in half twice once once length wise. This makes what my brother calls Jibarito Sliders =). Usually you would just cut them in half length wise.
  • Heat a little bit of oil in your pan and sear the steak. With steak thin enough you should only have to cook them a couple of minutes on each side. Once Steaks are done slice them in strips.
  • Fill your pan with more oil, heat the oil with a medium/high heat. Fry your plantains you don't want them to brown. You just want to soften them up roughly 7 minutes or so.
  • Let the plantains cool a little bit, then you want to smash them. There is a press for this but I do not have one so I use my hand or a spatula. If you wanted you could use the bottom of a dinner plate.
  • Once all the plantains are flattened bring them back to the fryer and fry again until they are a golden brown. Remove from oil and allow to cool.
  • Build your sandwich in this order. Plantain, Steak, Lettuce, Tomato, Cilantro, use the spread you made earlier and spread it on the top Plantain… and BAM!! one of the greatest sandwiches you will EVER eat is done.
