Authentic Puerto Rican Tostones are an awesome little side dish or snack in Puerto Rican cuisine. I have been eating these since I was a little kid, HECK back in my elementary school days I buttered a few teachers up with these. Seeing as I am taking the Family on their first trip to Puerto Rico this fall I wanted to give them a taste of some of the foods I love form the island.

Authentic Puerto Rican Tostones Recipe

Total Time 17 minutes

Ingredients

  • Plantains
  • Salt

Instructions

  • Skin your plantains, do this by cutting the ends off, find one of the ribs and slice down it. You can use a spoon or your thumb to get under the skin and peel it all off. Slice your Plantains into about 1 inch sections on a slight angle.
  • On a medium/high heat you want to fry the Plantains for about 5ish minutes. If they are not fully submerged then flip them half way through. You just want them fried to soften them up.
  • Allow to cool a little so you don't burn yourself, you want to smash the Plantains down. There is a press for this but I don't have one. You can use the bottom of a plate, a spatula, or even your hand.
  • Take them bake to your oil and on a medium.high heat. Fry until they are a nice golden brown on both sides. Lightly salt and allow to cool and they are ready to serve.

Notes

Seriously this is one of the simplest appetizers/sides PERIOD in Puerto Rican Cuisine. I made a TON for this video and between the family and co-workers they didn’t last very long.
If you have any questions at all feel free to ask I will answer as quickly as possible.
