How to Make the Best Chicken Fried Chicken

Total Time 33 minutes
Course Dinner, Main Course
Cuisine American, Southern
Servings 4 Servings

Ingredients

Chicken:

  • 4 Thin Chicken Breasts
  • 2 Cups Flour
  • 2 tsp. Baking Powder
  • 1 tsp. Baking Soda
  • 1 tsp. Garlic Powder
  • 1-1/2 Cup Buttermilk
  • 1 Egg
  • 1 Tbsp. Hot Sauce Optional
  • Salt
  • Pepper

Gravy:

  • 4 Tbsp. Butter
  • 1/3 Cup Flour
  • 2 Cups Milk
  • Salt
  • Pepper

Instructions

  • Heat oil in your fryer or dutch oven to 325˚F.
  • In a large bowl whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, pepper, and garlic powder. In a second bowl combine the buttermilk, egg and hot sauce. Place the chicken in the buttermilk mixture and make sure it is completely covered.
  • One breast at a time dredge them through the flour mixture and add into your heated oil and fry for about 5 to 7 minutes until the chicken is cooked all the way through and is a nice golden brown.
  • While the chicken is cooking we can start on the gravy. In a sauce pan add the butter and allow it to melt down over a medium heat. Whisk in the flour and allow to cook for about 1 minute. Slowly whisk in the milk until it is completely combined. Bring it to a boil, turn down the heat and allow it to simmer to thicken up. Remove from the heat and salt and pepper to taste.
  • Pour gravy over the chicken and serve.
